President: Doug Hull

College: Emmanuel

Subject: Geography, Part II

I'm president of CUDEAS for this academic year, having been on the committee last year as Junior Expeditions Officer. I also helped organise DofE at my school, where I completed my own Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards. I enjoyed helping to organise the award at school and was pleased to be able to continue this at Cambridge; so I'm happy to take on the role of president this year! I've always liked the outdoors, and did a lot of walking and camping at school. I've continued this when possible in our long vacations! For my Gold award skills I played the piano; my service was the Combined Cadet Force; my physical recreation was tennis; and my residential was a work experience placement at Bristol University. My qualifier expedition was a very wet but nonetheless very enjoyable 4 days in the Brecon Beacons! Please get in touch with any questions or queries regarding any aspect of the award and I'll be happy to help!

Membership Secretary:

Laura Burrows

College: Sidney Sussex

Subject: Natural Sciences

I completed all the Duke of Edinburgh Awards at school and really enjoyed them so want to help give others the chance to do the awards. For my gold award I helped in a charity shop, played the trumpet, played rugby and went on a conservation week with the National Trust. I've always really enjoyed hillwalking and camping and am currently working towards becoming a Mountain leader.

Treasurer: Bethan Gudgeon

College: Murray Edwards (Graduated 2011)

Subject: Psychology (NatSci)

I am Treasurer for this year and have just graduated from a natsci degree, specialised in Psychology, at Murray Edwards; I currently work in a Nursery just north of Cambridge. I completed all the Duke of Edinburgh Awards at school and thought that this was now an opportunity to help others complete the award. For my gold award I was a Rainbow leader, played the piano, played netball, went on a Senior Section Guide camp and did a canoe expedition. I love the outdoors and anything adventurous and encourage all to enjoy the opportunity the award gives you to take part in a wide range of activities.

Senior Expeditions Officer: James Berry

I wanted to study at Cambridge, but my A-levels weren't good enough, and so I have degrees from Bristol University and Imperial College. I was Financial Director at Cambridge University Press for 16 years, until I took (very) early retirement 5 years ago. I live near Homerton College and think Cambridge is a great city. Married with two grown-up sons, my interests are the usual things - music, current affairs, reading, cinema. I enjoy travel abroad and think it's important to connect with the locals and appreciate their culture. I like learning foreign languages, and took Italian GCSE in 2008 and Spanish AS level in 2009.

I've been walking in the hills and mountains since my early teens. I'm a professionally qualified Mountain Leader, skilled in navigation, moving over steep ground, campcraft, emergency procedures, expedition planning and the mountain environment. I'm working my way round all 214 peaks in Wainwright's Guide to the Lakeland Fells (I've done 97 to date). I also enjoy long distance walking, and have finished the Coast To Coast Walk, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, the Cleveland Way and the Norfolk Coast Path. Next is the 630-mile South West Coast Path (I've done 222 miles so far).

I've been involved with the society for two years now, and have been on four expeditions. I really enjoy the fact that the society is student-led, which makes it unstuffy and informal. Looking forward to many more expeditions in the future!

Junior Expeditions Officer:

Rebecca Howard

College: Girton

Subject: Veterinary Medicine (Part II)

As Junior Expeditions Officer and so have some say in the exciting decisions of where we go and how the expeditions are organised. I am a third year vet at Girton, studying Neuroscience this year and so hope that I will have time to do as much in the outdoors as possible before clinical years start! For my Gold Award I played the flute and tuba, learnt to kayak and helped at Riding For The Disabled.

IT Officer: Simon Herzberg

College: Fitzwilliam (Graduated in 2010)

Subject: Biological Anthropology (Arch & Anth Tripos)

I am IT Officer this year but before I graduated in June 2010, I took the roles of Senior Expeditions Officer (07/08), President (08/09) and Treasurer (09/10). As IT Officer, I am working hard to revitalise the website. This year will see a new design and more key society systems integrated online (e.g. the use of PayPal for membership and expedition payments). I also keep our news page updated and our photo albums with expedition snaps. If you have any suggestions or feedback for the site please get in touch.

I completed my Duke of Edinburgh's Award at school and when I came up to Cambridge, I wanted to continue my association with the award. Together with Hannah and James, I have helped to organise expeditions to the Peak District, Snowdonia National Park and the Lake District.

I obtained my Mountain Leader training from the Army at the Joint Service Mountain Training Centre in North Wales in 2006 and my first aid certificate from Plas Y Brenin mountain training centre in 2008. These qualifications allow me to lead and supervise expeditions for the society. My experience includes mountaineering in Snowdonia, the Peaks, the Lakes and Scotland. I enjoy scrambling as well and the odd rock climb. Overseas, I have climbed mountains in Kenya, Ecuador, the Spanish Pyrenees and Greece.
